App review 10/25/09

NEW UPDATES RETURNING THIS WEEK!!

Today's review is for the WEATHER CHANNEL app.(0.99)

Although the iphone comes standard with a weather app(that's near impossible to delete), I myself prefer the weather channel app. It is very easy to use, and gives you a lot of details that other apps don't like sunrise/sunset, wind, humidity, and visability. It's tabs offer you a 10 day forecast, video from weatherchannel.com, maps, and severe weather alerts(a nice feature). You can also quickly see a hourly forecast(nice for golfers), ands a 36 hour forecast as well.

I will give the iphone's weather app 1 advantage though. You can VERY QUICKLY browse through different city's weather just by flicking right and left.(Whichever cities you choose). All in all though, the Weather Channel app is very nice, free, and resourceful.

App review 10/21/09

Today's review is for the app WHITE PAGES

First of all, there are MANY useful apps available for the greatest phone on earth, but make no mistake.....this one is one of the MOST useful for a few different reasons!

White pages it basically what it sounds like...White pages. When opening the app, White pages will ask if it can use your current location which it will use to give you directions should you need them. Tabs across the bottom include "People", "Businesses", and "Reverse Phone".

When you choose the "people" tab, you can enter the last name of a person, and a city/zip code if you know one. If you don't know the city, enter the state. The list will populate when you push search. Same goes for businesses. When you search a person, the results will include the person's full name, address, phone number, age group, and other household residents....seriously.(Little scary isn't it)

Here are 2 things that make the app SO MUCH BETTER than a normal person/business search. When you search and find a person or business, you can select the "directions" tab, which will open Google maps with directions to the person or business...very nice.

There are 2 more GREAT things about the app! "Reverse number search" allows you to look up someone who may have called you, and didn't leave a message. Rather than call them back, you can see who it was this way. Great feature.

Then last feature is simply brilliant, and was so incredibly convenient I cant even begin to "thank it". When you search someone, and all of that info comes up, you can make a new contact out of it, or ADD THE INFO TO EXISTING CONTACTS. So in other words, you can search your friends, and quickly/easily import their addresses and other info into their contact profile! No more typing out lengthy addresses!

Enjoy White pages......I do!

*Loan/Mortgage calculator
*Period calculator- believe it or not...even useful for the guys!
*Pricegrab- find the best shopping deals
*Random number- basically just...well....gives you a random number.
*Ruler- useful!
*Sale price- Let's you figure out "final price"
*System info- gives you phone internal info
*Tip calculator- I know my wife needs this one!
*Translator- Tons of languages! Type a word of sentence, and translate it in a language.
*Unit calculator
*Google books - GREAT utility if you like to read.

That's all of them! Pretty self explanatory. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks 2

Here are a few more tips and tricks for your iphone. I post a few at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed learning 30 new things at once.

1. How to ignore/dismiss the "suggested word" while typing. While texting or typing, the iphone will randomly suggest words for you. The suggested word is USED if you tap the space bar, but what if you DON'T want the suggested word? The suggested word will have a little "x" that dismisses the word if you press it, but tap the screen ANYWHERE, and the word will be dismissed. It does not have to be on the "x"

2. How to take a screen shot. First of all, some have asked "What's a screen shot?" Well let me first answer that. A screen shot is like taking a picture of exactly what is currently appearing on your iphone screen. Taking a screen shot will insert the picture directly into your camera roll. Now.....How to do it. When you want to save the picture on your screen, simply HOLD the home button(Main round button in front), and press the mute/sleep button(top left). Your screen shot is complete!

3. Maximizing battery life. Here is a neat little trick that you can use to help save battery life.
There is a separate sensor situated right above the earpiece, that detects ambient light. The iPhone uses this sensor only once per session, just as you unlock the handset. But if you cover the sensor as you unlock the phone, you will trick the handset into thinking it’s in a dark room, and it will power down the screen brightness. You can also turn off Bluetooth and WiFi if you don’t expect to use them for a while. You can also set email fetch time to “Hourly” or “Manually”, and turn the “Push” off in order to save energy.

App review 10/15/09

Today's review is for a game named TRADEWINDS 2 (4.99)

Tradewinds 2 is a fun and addictive game available in the app store. You can be one of 4 characters, and if you beat the game once, you can be a NEW character, or create your own.

There are a few objects to the game:

Make money by defeating pirates in battle at sea, or buying goods cheap, and selling them for profit.

Accomplish tasks set forth by governors of towns like rescuing wives, obtaining priceless artifacts and hunting down wanted men.

Build your ship up by upgrading type, weapons, and special features.

Pictures below show a few screenshots including(left to right): 1.map of the world, and cities to visit, 2. The view of IN TOWN including the pubs to visit to get info, the bank, and the shipyard. 3. A battle between you and some enemy ships.

Overall the game is a lot of fun, and the different story lines will keep you busy and interested for a long time!

App review 10/14/09

Today's review is for a GREAT application called RED LASER (1.99)

Red Laser is simply too good to be true. It is one of the highest rated apps ever(nearly everyone gives it 5 stars), and is amazingly accurate.

Just open the app,(it looks like you have the camera app open), and point it at ANY bar code on ANY type of product, and it will read the bar code, and show you:

The product
It's price on Amazon
It's price with a google search
Different vendor's who sell the product
and More!

You can manually type a code in if the bar code is damaged, and you can e-mail yourself, or anyone the results of your scan including where to find the product the CHEAPEST.

Here's an example!

You're at a bookstore, and see a book you might want to read. The price is 16.95. You scan the bar code with Red Laser. It shows the book NEW on Amazon for 11.95, or maybe a used version for 3.99! You can really save a lot of money with this app, and it works with just about everything!

I tried everything in my house, and it recognised everything including my Cosco baby wipes!

Talk to you all soon, and as always.....Thanks for visiting.

Making money via iphone?

This post will need updated as more and more information comes in. I am doing a great deal of research as to how to not only ENJOY iphone completely, but to use it to help supplement income, and we can ALL use that.

The First idea I want to talk about is Cash Crate http://cashcrate.com/356604

Cash crate is a survey site. You CAN make decent money doing surveys in your spare time. There are also free trials such as Blockbuster online, NetFlix, Free Credit Report, and more.
Singing up for on of these can warrant $10-$15 just for TRYING them! It's a very easy way to make extra money while at home. I actually do occasional surveys RIGHT FROM MY IPHONE.

So how else do I use iphone to boost my cashcrate income?

First off, Cashcrate pays handsomely for having referrels. By referring others, you can make 20-25% of what THEY make, plus 10-15% of who THEY refer! http://cashcrate.com/356604

So now...How I use iphone to get referrals. I visit forums promoting money making, and promote MY business ventures. I obtain referrals that way, and I use CRAIGSLIST to discuss my ventures in the rant and raves page. Basically, when I have spare time, I am "getting the name out", and you can to!

Feel free to e-mail me if you need help getting started or have questions!

Today's review is for the app OFFENDER LOCATOR

Although this is a touchy subject(no pun intended), this is a useful app when wanting to know if there are offenders in your area, or an area you MAY want to move to.

Offender locator will use GPS to mark your current location, and show you surrounding offenders. You can also use a contact's address, or any address you want to type in.

This app will put the offenders in order based on "closest to you".

Another feature (as scary as it is), is that it will give you each offender's address, and MAP it for you. Each offender's picture is also provided. Some may feel this App is overkill, but it can come in handy to take extra precautions for your family.

App review 10/10/09

Today's review is for the app SPORTACULAR.

It is clearly one of my favorites! This app is for sports fans plain and simple. It has a great layout, and fast scoring updates for pretty much any sport.

The best feature of Sportacular is the ability to quickly and easily set "alerts" for any game that you are really interested in. You will get a notification when the game starts, ends, and when there is a score change. You can edit what exactly it alert you of. The alert looks like a "text", but is a notification NOT a text, and you will NOT be charged for a text message.

App review 10/9/09

Todays review is for 3 fun trivia apps.

Movie Challenge(1.99)

Music Challenge(1.99)

Who wants to be a millionaire(4.99)

All three come with a "lite" version which is free.

Movie challenge and Music challenge are made by the same company, play very similar, and both have given me a great deal of fun when I have free time! Both can be played on easy, medium, and hard, and NEITHER one has given me a repeat question yet(4+ months).

To the right is a picture of movie challenge. There are 5 rows of 4, and the object is
to answer questions correctly, and move down to the bottom, where you "win" if you answer a question in the bottom row. There are different categories including
horror, drama, acrtion, romance, comedy, actors, actresses, and more. Everytime
you beat a block, it will show a green checkmark, and the categories to the left,
right, and below will light up. Types of questions include quotes, true/false, guess the year, put in order, fill in the blank, and more!

High scores are kept, and national rankings are kept as well. This app is a MUST for trivia buffs.

Music Challenge is very similar except it has one EXTRA feature that is very exciting! It builds a category based on the music you keep in your iphone! Talk about fun, if you think you know everything about your music, you're probably wrong!

Last of the 3 is Who want to be a millionaire. It is played EXACTLY like the show. 15 questions to win a million, 4 lifelines, and of course.....Meredith! One of the neat things is that the experts you have to use, are the SAME experts that appear on the show, each with real strengths and weaknesses. Dont ask Ogi Ogas about the NFL, but Neuroscience he doesnt miss!

Another really cool feature, is that it pulls your contacts into the game so when you "phone a friend", your choices are your REAL friends! Don't worry, it doesn't really call them, but it does show their picture and they are all semi-intelligent!

Take care all, talk to you soon!

Tips Tricks and Random Info

The iphone does a lot more than some people know. It really is an amazing device. Some people don't get everything out of the iphone that they could, and this post may introduce you to some things you may or may not have known about the iphone!

1. Where to find the iphone user guide. Believe it or not, alot of people do NOT know where to find the user guide. You can find it by opening Safari on your phone, then clicking the bookmark symbol. The user guide is the next to last bookmark listed. The iphone web apps bookmark is the last one listed, and is pretty cool!

2. How to QUICKLY scroll to the top of a web page(and expose the url bar). Have you ever been on a website, and wanted to type in a new web address or just scroll to the top without finger swiping 20 times? This is WAY easier than you may have imagined. Just simply touch the gray bar at the top of the screen (right where the time and battery life are displayed.) Poof! Your at the top.

3. .net, .edu, .org. When typing in a web address that is NOT a .com, hold down the .com button, and a .net .edu .org menu pops up. Slide your finger over to the one you want! You can also hold your finger on a letter while typing, and get an alternate letter menu such as a tilde.

4. Save a web picture to your camera roll. While browsing a website, you can save any picture to your camera roll by simply holding your finger on the picture until a menu pops up. Your choices at that time are: Save picture, and Cancel.

I will post a few tips and tricks periodically so that you can become familiar with a few at a time, and work toward being a iphone expert!

App review 10/8/09

Today's review is for the app KOREDOKO (currently FREE)

When I downloaded Koredoko it was 0.99, but now the app is free. Koredoko is a pretty nice app to have because it will use your camera roll, and "map" every picture that you've taken! This app is especially exciting to those who take a lot of pictures!

Just open the application, and it will begin showing you your pictures one at a time (like browsing them in camera roll), but each picture will be on the bottom half of the screen while a Google map will be above it. It will pin-point(map) each picture that you've taken, showing you exactly where you took the picture! The best part is, the mapping has all the Google map features, to you can see the location in regular map, satellite, or hybrid view!

Because this app is 100% free now, I would say it's a must have. Just download it, and stick it next to your "pictures" app.

App review 10/7/09

Today's review is for the App Cardstar

I downloaded cardstar on advice from a friend, and it has turned out to be one of my favorite apps on the iphone. Favorite enough to earn page 2 on my phone!

Cardstar allows you to place BAR CODES right on your phone for things like grocery store reward cards, gas reward cards, and even AAA information.

Simply click the add new button "+" , and choose the type of retail store that you want to add. Cardstar will use GPS to recognise the grocery and drug store chains in your area(among other retail types). After choosing a retailer, simply enter the number found under the bar code of any card you want to use, and cardstar will create that exact bar code RIGHT ON YOUR PHONE.

Have you ever run out to get gas, or groceries without your wallet, and then thought "darn, I don't have my rewards card for this store." Well if you have your phone with you, you're in luck!

I myself keep 3 grocery store chains, a hair salon, AAA, and a few others on my iphone. The clerk just scans my PHONE, and BINGO!

CARDSTAR turned out to be way more convenient than I had ever thought!

Extracting ipod/iphone music for a new PC/MAC

Unfortunately Apple makes your iphone able to sync with only 1 computer. So what happens if you get a new one?

Well, the first time I decided to switch my primary "iphone" computer, I had a rather easy time extracting all the music and files from a free online program called "podshare". I would NOT recommend podshare anymore, because I believe they aren't free any longer, and not as effective as a program i did find.

I bought a new Dell laptop for business and pleasure, and decided it would be my syncing computer for my iphone. The problem was, I couldnt get ANYTHING to work as far as extracting all of my music into the new computer. I googled, and googled, tried a few free programs that did NOT work, and then.....

I stumbled upon:

Tansee iphone transfer

I was hesitant at first because it was 19.99. Upon browsing through their product, they said if I order now it would be 20% off.

I bit

I'm very glad I did! It is EXTREMELY easy to use, and quickly and easily extracted my music, and placed it into itunes on my new computer!

Tansee....you are welcome for the plug!

How to create you OWN ringtones.

Hello, I am Arnie, and this blog was created to help users get the most out of their iphones. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with my iphone, but needless to say it doesn't leave my side much!

Through my different updates, I will help users with often asked quesations such as:

- Which apps are worth downloading
- How to make your OWN ringtones
- How to get music OFF your iphone onto a new computer
- And More.

Today is a step by step guide on how to make your own ringtones for your iphone.

First of all there are a couple things you have to know.

This works with any music that you did NOT purchase through itunes. If you downloaded music from limewire or another music share client, than this will work for you! Another thing to know is that SOME users have had trouble doing this with itunes 9 as Apple would prefer you purchased their ringtones for 1.29 rather than make your own for free! Apple may have applied some software to itunes 9 that may disrupt the FREE RINGTONE process. I have 2 laptops. One for business, and one that I use for music and iphone-related items, and I keep itunes 8 on it. I have made MANY ringtones, and just verified this morning that it still works(AND IT DOES). Let's begin!

1. Open itunes (ok the hard part is done)

2. Choose the song that you want to make a ringtone out of.

3. Listen to the song and watch the timer to decide which 30 seconds you want to use as a ringtone. For instance if you want to use the chorus of a song as your 30 second ring tone, listen to it and jot down what time is on the timer when the part you want begins, and ends. Keep the length 30 seconds or less. Now your ready for the technical stuff!

4. Right click on the song that you want to make the ringtone out of and choose "get info" which will be the 1st choice. A box will come up, and your next step is to choose the options tab at the top. About half way down you will notice a start and stop time for your song. Change the start and stop time to your desired times (example 0:32 to 0:57), and CHECK THE BOXES NEXT TO START AND STOP TIME. Click "ok" which will close that box.

5. Next, right click on your song again and choose "Create AAC Version", this will make a shorter version of your song equal to the start and stop time you chose. It will appear right below the original song.

6. Next, left click on the song, and drag it to your desktop. Leave that be for a moment.

7. Right click on the AAC version of your song again and choose "delete". A box will appear asking you to cancel or remove. Choose "remove" and another box will appear with 3 choices. "Cancel", "Send to recycle bin", or "Keep file". Choose "KEEP FILE". Your AAC version will now be gone from itunes. Relax you are almost done.

8. Go to the song file that you dragged to your desktop it will be the name of the song followed by "w4a". Right click on your song, and choose "rename". Change the "w4a" to "w4r" and hit enter. A box will ask you if you're sure you want to change the file type and you select "yes". You're at the end!

9. Just double click the file on your desktop that you just changed and it will be magically sucked right into your "ringtones" folder.

10. SYNC your phone and the ringtone will be there!!! Make sure the ringtone box is checked in your sync settings.

Believe me the first few times you make a ringtone it may seen like alot to do, but after you do it 5 or 6 times You'll fly through it. Good luck, and enjoy!!
